John C. Kunze was born in Saxony at Artern on the Unstrut and graduated from the University of Leipzig in 1763. He came to America in 1770 to assume a pastorate in Philadelphia, Pa. under the tutelage of Henry Melchoir Muhlenberg, the patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. Established in 1797 as the first Lutheran Seminary in the United States. John Christopher Hartwick (1714-1796) was born in Molschleben, Germany and educated at the University of Halle. He arrived in America in 1746 an ordained Lutheran minister. He had a strong desire to establish a seminary and send missionaries out to Christianize the Indians.
